Facial Treatments: How to Decide Which is Best For You
This post was written by Rebekah Gerber, Director, The Spa, Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise

Managing our skin during the changing seasons can be difficult. Our skin changes with the rhythm of the seasons, reacting to changing humidity levels, UV rays, wind, cold and heat. Whenever possible it is great to get a facial each time the seasons change to slough off the dead, dry skin and allow your face to breath in the new climate. When booking a facial with a professional, there are a few things to consider.
What is your skin type?
If you are sensitive you will want to avoid facials with active ingredients or multi-acid peels, as these can result in potential redness after the service, which may not be desirable if you have to attend an event afterwards.
Be aware that you may break out after the facial. Sometimes a good deep clean is exactly what our skin needs, which means the facial may clear your pores and result in the bad stuff coming to the surface. Do not be alarmed, just be prepared.
What product lines are being used?
Many different spas will use different product lines. It can be helpful to ask which lines are being used and to do some research beforehand so you know exactly what is being put on your skin. All natural is the way to go and many lines are incorporating this so it is a lot easier to access now.
What do you have planned afterwards?
It is always best to allow your skin to breathe after a facial to allow it to properly absorb the amazing products that have just been applied. Try to avoid steam rooms, an intense workout, or applying makeup for at least an hour after your facial to allow the products that have been applied to serve their purpose.
The #1 facial we recommend at The Spa at Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise
Our 90-minute Nature’s True Indulgence facial features Tata Harper products. Tata Harper is 100% all natural and non-toxic. It works incredibly well for all skin types and targets anti-aging. The facial includes a Quadruple-Masque System to act on each level of the skin, delivering lifting, hydrating and correcting effects. Advanced muscle-relaxing neuropeptides instantly reduce wrinkles, reinforce collagen and restore the skin's youthful cushion. This facial includes a luxurious Ageless Hand Treatment and signature facial massages to stimulate healthy circulation. We will revive your tired eyes with a thermal-eye therapy mask that will reduce signs of fatigue and immediately give you radiant and healthy skin.

DIY facials are an easy way to prolong the benefits of a service done professionally, without breaking the bank. All you need are a few simple products and tools and you’re all set.
Oil Cleanser: Source a quality oil cleanser that is intended to remove makeup and prep the skin. We recommend Tata Harper Nourishing Oil Cleanser, which is best applied to the face, massaged into the skin and removed with a wet hot towel. The towel will remove the cleanser and the heat will help to open your pores to better receive the rest of the products that you will be using.
Gently Exfoliate: Once all your makeup and impurities from the day have been removed, use a gentle exfoliating cleanser to slough off dead dry skin. We recommend the Tata Harper Regenerating Cleanser, which is best applied to dry skin and removed with warm water.
Mask and Massage: Massaging a mask into the skin will add a specialized treatment to your skin, allowing any inflammation or irritation to disappear. We recommend the Kerstin Florian Algae Gel Masque, as it's suitable for all skin types and adds hydration, as well as a cooling effect which helps to resist redness. It’s also great to treat sunburns!
Moisturize: An effective moisturizer is key when completing your skin care routine. Try and source one that is suitable for your skin type without being too full of unnecessary fillers. Our “go to” moisturizer is the Kerstin Florian Rescue Cream. This lightweight, deeply hydrating cream can be used day or night (depending on skin type) and also helps to protect against harsh elements during colder months.
Seal it in: Once all your products have been applied, use a tool like a Jade Roller, or Gua Sha board, to produce a cooling effect that will seal the product and minimize pores. Lightly massage the roller or board across the skin, moving from the middle of your face to the outside. This will reduce puffiness and swelling and stimulate circulation.
We always recommend practicing DIY facials in the evening so that your skin has a chance to properly absorb and benefit from the products applied.
We hope this inspires you to try a DIY facial at home or to visit our talented professionals at The Spa for a facial treatment.
Blessings,
Rebekah
